Tooby was an illustrator and poster designer. Born John Raymond Tooby in Stourbridge, West Midlands, he was the son of a farm labourer. He worked for clients including Guinness, London Transport and Worthington.
Design publications from the time suggest he was active from the 1930s until the end of his life in 1961.
