Details: This poster stamp promotes tourism in Portugal. The text translates to read ‘Country of a Thousand Colours’. It was published as part of a set of large souvenir stamps which look c.1960s.

The artwork is by Thomaz José de Mello (1906-1990), a designer and artist who signed his work ‘TOM’. He was born in Rio de Janeiro but lived much of his life in Portugal. Many of his paintings featured city landscapes with patchwork-like depictions of buildings. He had more than 50 solo exhibitions in his career.

The artwork originally appeared on a 1959 poster design.
