John Philip Falter (1910-1982) was born in Nebraska, USA. After studying at the Kansas City Art Institute, he moved to New York where he took classes at the Grand Central School of Art. He began his career illustrating covers for pulp magazines and soon opened his own studio.

During the Second World War, Falter joined the US Navy and was put on special assignment as an artist. He designed over 300 recruiting posters.

Falter was later commissioned by publications including Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, and Life Magazine. However, he was best known for his work for The Saturday Evening Post - he illustrated more than 129 covers from the late 1940s to the early 1970s.

As magazines used less illustration by the 1970s, Falter moved towards portraiture and book illustration. His work is held in several museums and he was elected to the Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1976.
