Károly “Charles” Rohonyi was born in Budapest and began his career as a photographer and cinematographer, working from 1933 as an assistant in Hungarian film studios. In 1936, he started producing posters with his wife, graphic designer Alice Dér - together they signed their collaborative work as “Chy-Dér.” Their best-known pieces were propaganda posters.
From 1945 to 1948, Rohonyi taught poster design at the Atelier art school. After being commissioned to organise an exhibition in Brussels, he settled in Belgium, where he continued his career as a graphic and poster designer.
Rohonyi retired from commercial work in 1977, devoting his later years to creating collage art.
